Ten tested prompts for surface pattern design — botanicals, geometrics, terrazzo, block print, toile — with the unedited tile beside each, and the two-minute fix that makes any of them actually repeat.
Not out of the box, and anyone telling you otherwise hasn't tiled the file. Ask for “seamless repeating pattern” and Nano Banana gives you a beautiful, evenly distributed, all-over design — but the left edge doesn't mathematically continue into the right edge, so tiling it produces a visible seam every tile width. That's true of every current general-purpose image model; seamlessness is a geometric constraint, not a style, and these models generate pixels rather than solving constraints.
The fix takes about two minutes and is completely reliable. Open the tile in any editor with an offset filter (Photoshop's Offset, GIMP's Offset, Affinity's equivalent), shift it by half its width and half its height so the former edges now meet in the middle, then heal or clone over the visible cross-shaped seam using the pattern's own motifs. Offset back and the tile repeats perfectly. Prompting for “an evenly distributed all-over pattern with motifs of similar scale and no large empty areas”, as every prompt here does, makes that cleanup trivial — a dense, even design has no awkward gaps to patch.
Three ingredients: the motif, the layout and the technique. The motif is what repeats — “small hand-painted fennel sprigs and single seed heads”. The layout is how they sit — “evenly scattered in a half-drop arrangement, motifs at consistent scale, no large empty areas, nothing cropped awkwardly at the frame edge”. The technique is the medium — “gouache with visible brush texture”, “flat vector with hard edges”, “lino block print with imperfect ink coverage”.
Scale is the setting people forget. “Small-scale ditsy print” and “large-scale bold motif” are different products: one is a shirting fabric, the other is a feature wallpaper. State it explicitly, because the model's default is a mid-scale design that suits nothing in particular. And name the palette in real colours — a pattern's commercial value is mostly in its colourway, and “muted palette of clay, sage and bone on off-white” gets you something you'd actually put on a wall. “Small-scale ditsy print” and “large-scale wallpaper motif” are different products with different buyers. The model's unprompted default is a mid-scale pattern that suits neither.
